Just southeast of Vermilion, Oberlin College offers world class concerts, recitals, dance, theater and opera. Founded in 1833, Oberlin was the first institution of higher education in America to adopt a policy to admit students of color (1835) and the first college to award bachelor’s degrees to women (1841) in a coeducational program.

Culture
Oberlin features more than 400 concerts and recitals, about 40 theater and dance productions and two operas each year.
Oberlin College’s esteemed Artist Recital Series is one of the oldest continuing concert series in the United States. Since its inception in 1878, more than 1,000 of the most acclaimed and accomplished musicians, conductors, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and composers have graced the stage of historic Finney Chapel. Stars of such international stature as Dave Brubeck, Alicia de Larrocha, Glenn Gould, Denyce Graves, Jascha Heifetz, Vladimir Horowitz, Yo-Yo Ma, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Isaac Stern, George Szell, and Eugene Ysaÿe, to name but a few, have performed under the auspices of Oberlin’s Artist Recital Series, enriching the College, the town of Oberlin, and northern Ohio. More than an impressive “Who’s Who,” the list is an illumination of the best of serious music, spanning the late 19th century to the present.
Founded in 1917, the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM) is one of the finest college or university collections in the United States. Comprising more than 12,000 works of art from virtually every culture and spanning the history of art, the AMAM's collection is a vital cultural resource for the students, faculty, and staff of Oberlin College as well as the surrounding community. Notable strengths include seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish art, nineteenth and early twentieth-century European and contemporary American art, and Asian, European, and American works on paper. The collection is housed in an impressive Italian Renaissance-style building designed by Cass Gilbert and named after its founder, Dr. Dudley Peter Allen (B.A. 1875), a distinguished graduate and trustee of Oberlin College. In 1977, Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates designed an addition that represents one of the earliest and finest examples of postmodern architecture in the United States.

Libraries
Oberlin has four libraries housing 2.3 million items: the Mudd Learning Center and three other libraries specializing in music, art, and science.

38,000 and growing; since 1920, more Obies have gone on to earn PhDs than graduates from any other predominantly undergraduate liberal arts college; three have been recipients of a Nobel Prize; six have been awarded MacArthur “genius” Fellowships.
